Learning Objectives: ART 1009: Art Appreciation (Fall 2016) Class Time: T/R 11:00 - 12:15 Walker Hall Room 1-102 Professor: Megan Smith Office Hours: By appointment on T/R Email: mesmith@ulm.edu Office: Bry 206 Office Phone: (318) 342-7968 Course Prerequisites: None Course Description: This course is designed to familiarize students with major developments in art and to establish an appreciation of art as an enhancement to their lives. Course Objectives and Outcomes To enable the student to have a basic knowledge of the elements and principles of art and design To enable students to look at visual art and appreciate/understand its content and meaning To enable the student to recognize major pieces of art from the history of art Course Topics: Elements of Design, Principles of Design, Major works of art from all areas of visual art, including, but not limited to, architecture, painting, design, drawing, printmaking, photography, installation, sculpture, and video. Instructional Methods and Activities The professor will lecture in this course on works of art using digital technology set up in the smart classroom. Although this is a lecture class, student participation through questions and comments is encouraged. Students are responsible for all reading assignments. It is not necessary to bring the textbook to class. All images and necessary information will be displayed during the lecture. In addition to formal review sessions, the content and format of the exam are frequently modeled in class to provide students with greater familiarity regarding the design and evaluation of exam questions. While many images may be shown in class, students will only be responsible for certain images on the exam. Those images and their basic identifying information will be posted online, making computer access a required component for this class. Class information, readings, assignments and quizzes may be communicated through Moodle. Evaluation and Grade Assignment Midterm: 100 pt Final: 100 pt Other: Attendance, in class and homework assignments, art projects and participation Each exam will be a mix of objective type questions. Exams are not comprehensive. For more information, see Section VIII-K Class attendance is not only a vital component to successful performance on exams, it could also be a factor in determining a student’s final grade. Consult the Attendance Policy in section VIII-C. As stated in ULM Student Policy Manual, “Any student who is not present for at least 75% of the scheduled class sessions in any course [which translates to 8 unexcused absences for this course this semester] may receive a grade of ‘W’ if this condition occurs prior to the last day to drop a course or a grade of ‘F’ after that date.” (http://catalog.ulm.edu/index.php?catoid=21) Mid-term grades will be posted on Banner for students to view. Mid-term grades indicate a student’s status at mid-semester only and do not indicate a student’s final performance outcome. The grading scale for the course is a ten point scale. 100-90 = A, 89-80 = B, 79-70 = C, 69-60 = D, and <60 = F. Class Policies and Procedures Required Textbook (Recommended): Prebles’ ARTFORMS, 11th Edition, ISBN-13: 978-0205989331, ISBN-10: 0205989330 Other Required Materials: Scantron (measuring 8.5” x 11”) and #2 Pencil for each exam Attendance Policy: Students must inform the professor by email in advance of any anticipated absences connected with a University-sponsored activity. Any other absences from class should be reserved for family emergencies and illness, but students should only contact the professor when the absence occurs on an exam day. It is the responsibility of the student to stay current with the material presented in class. Therefore, if you are absent, regardless of the reason, you should first contact other students for notes and then read about the material in the text. Make-Up Policy: If a student has a good excuse for missing an exam and notifies the professor as soon as possible, permission to take a make-up exam will be given. All approved make-up exams will be composed entirely of essay questions and will be given at a time appointed by the professor Academic Integrity: Students must observe the published ULM policy with regard to cheating and plagiarism as found in the ULM Student Policy Manual (http://catalog.ulm.edu/index.php?catoid=21) Course Evaluation Policy: Students are expected to complete the online course evaluation Student Services: If a student has a documented disability and wishes to receive academic accommodations, the student should first contact the Counseling Center )www.ulm.ede/counselingcenter/special.htm) and then provide the professor with an Accommodation Form as soon as possible. For Exams, Counseling Center policy requires that “tests must be scheduled with the Counseling Center at least three (3) days before the test date.” Emergency Procedures: For an on-campus emergency, call 1-911. For non-emergency information, the campus police can be reached at (318) 342-5350 or www.ulm.edu/police Possible Objectionable Material: This class includes images that contain nudity, violence, and other imagery that may be offensive to some viewers. If you are unwilling to examine and discuss such works in an academic context then you should reconsider enrollment in this course. Resource for Student Reference: There is not a copy of the text on reserve in the Library. Exam Format: In order to discuss or cite any image, students are required to know the basic identification information associated with that image. Students will be provided with an image list for each exam. Identification of images may include culture, period, artist, title, location, and/or date. Memorization of this information is an important first step toward achieving proficiency with the course material. Vocabulary terms associated with lectures and reading may also be covered on tests. A list of these terms will also be provided for each test. The format for the exams could contain one or a combination of the following formats: Multiple choice Matching True/False Tentative Course Schedule The Professor reserves the right to adjust this schedule as needed. The pace of study will move along depending on how the class flows and the coverage of material. It is unlikely that an exam date must be changed.
