Levels: Undergraduate Main Campus Campus Lecture Schedule Type Web Based 100% online course Instructional Method Learning Objectives: This course is designed to assist students in forming an understanding and a personal perspective of what constitutes normal vs. abnormal human behavior. The relevance of historical era and sociocultural factors (including—but not limited to—age, gender, race, and geographic location) in making these difficult distinctions is stressed. By the end of the course, students should be able to: » Explain at least one definition of abnormal behavior that fits professional criteria. » Discuss the highlights of the diagnosis-based classification system of psychological and behavioral disorders. » Discriminate between the major symptom categories of psychological and behavioral disorders, and discuss the role of various sociocultural factors in making these determinations. » Discuss the historical changes in accepted points of view about mental and behavioral abnormalities.
